Overview
FR1ENDS helps you stick to screen time limits with support from friends in an accountability group. This policy explains what we collect, what your group can see, and what stays on your device.
Who We Are
FR1ENDS is operated by Maximilian Molisch as a natural person, based in Vienna, Austria. Under Article 4(7) GDPR, Maximilian Molisch is the controller of the personal data described in this policy. For anything in this policy — questions, requests, complaints — contact hey@fr1ends.app.
Data We Collect
When you use FR1ENDS we store:
- Email address — to create your account and sign you in.
- Username — shown in the app and to your accountability group.
- Profile photo (optional) — if you upload an avatar. Avatars are stored in a public storage bucket so the app can load them quickly, which means anyone with an avatar's direct link can view the image — choose a photo with that in mind.
- Device notification token — to send push alerts about messages, extension requests, and group activity.
- Timezone — set from your device when you sign in or change devices, so daily limits reset at midnight in the right zone.
- Limit configuration — the apps and websites you choose to limit, your daily caps for each, your limit status (within limits, at limit, or extension requested/active), and whether Screen Time access is granted on your device.
- Group chat messages — messages you send to your accountability group.
- Extension requests and votes — the reason you give when asking for more time, and each member's vote, including written reasons for denials.
- Group activity — a log of joins, leaves, removals, and limit changes, shown as system messages in the chat.
- Moderation reports — if you report a message, we store the report and a copy of the reported message.
- Blocks — the list of members you have blocked, so our servers can stop delivering their messages to you.
What Your Group Members See
Members of your accountability group can see your username, email address, and profile photo, which apps and websites you limit, your daily caps, and your limit status — including whether Screen Time access is currently granted on your device. They also see the messages you send in the group chat, your extension requests and how each member voted on them, and system messages about joining, leaving, and limit changes, and they are notified if you turn Screen Time access off. They cannot see your minute-by-minute usage.
Chat Moderation
You can report a message or block a member from the chat. Reporting sends us the message for review. Blocking is enforced by our servers, which stop delivering that member's messages to you — it affects only what you see, and the person you block is not told.
When a message is reported, we keep a copy of it as a moderation record. That copy is retained even if the original message or the sender's account is later deleted — this is what makes review of abusive content possible after the fact.
What Stays On Your Device
Your actual screen time usage — minutes used per app or website — is measured through Apple's Screen Time APIs and stays on your device. FR1ENDS does not upload your usage minutes to our servers.
How We Store and Process Data
Account and group data are stored in Supabase (database and authentication), hosted in the European Union. Data is transmitted over encrypted connections, and access is limited to what is needed to run the app. Supabase processes this data on our behalf and is committed to protections comparable to our own. Push notifications are delivered through Apple's push service, which operates globally. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we use industry-standard measures to protect your data.
We keep your data only as long as your account exists and it is needed to run FR1ENDS. Moderation copies of reported messages are kept as long as reasonably necessary for review and safety.
Legal Bases for Processing
Under Article 6 GDPR we process your data on these bases:
- Performance of a contract — running your account, group, chat, and extension requests when you use the app (Art. 6(1)(b)).
- Legitimate interests — reviewing reports of abuse, preventing misuse, and keeping moderation copies of reported messages so we can act on them (Art. 6(1)(f)).
- Consent — push notifications, and uploading an optional profile photo (Art. 6(1)(a)). You can withdraw consent at any time in Settings, or by deleting your account.
No Tracking, No Ads
FR1ENDS contains no advertising, no analytics, and no third-party tracking of any kind. We do not use the advertising identifier, we do not track you across other apps or websites, and we never sell your data. Your data is used only to run FR1ENDS.
Data Deletion
You can delete your account and associated data in the app: open the Settings tab, tap Delete Account, and confirm. This permanently removes your account, group membership, limits, chat messages, and history, and unblocks your apps. This cannot be undone.
One exception: if a message you sent was reported before you deleted it, the moderation copy of that message is retained for review, as described in Chat Moderation.
For other privacy or data requests, contact hey@fr1ends.app.
Your Rights
You can view and change your username and profile photo in the app, and delete your account and its data from Settings. Under EU data protection law (GDPR) you also have the right to ask for access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data, to object to or restrict its processing, and to receive a copy of it — email hey@fr1ends.app and we will handle it. You can also lodge a complaint with the Austrian Data Protection Authority.
Children
FR1ENDS is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13. If we learn that we have, we will delete it.
